At the culinary level, Zeelandic Flanders has a reputation to uphold. It has no less than 5 Michelin-starred restaurants, including the following in the immediate vicinity of Cadzand: AIRrepublic, Cadzand (*), Spetters, Breskens (*), La Trinité, Sluis (**) and Restaurant De Kromme Watergang in Hoofdplaat (**). Zeelandic Flanders is firmly on the map in the culinary arena, also internationally. We will be delighted to book a place for you at the restaurant of your choice.
INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT FOR BIRDS
The Zwin is a nature reserve at the mouth of the Westerschelde near Cadzand-Bad. The area covers 75 hectares. Behind the row of dunes, there is an area of salt marshes. This connects directly with the sea through the Zwin channel. Here, there are still large expanses of marsh samphire and sea lavender which are used by many chefs for culinary purposes.
The area is unusually rich in birds and plants. Every year, many thousands of birds land in the Zwin to breed, overwinter or look for food. Birds come and go constantly. The Zwin is also very unusual as a natural transition from one biotope to the other can be seen: beach – dunes on the one hand and beach – mudflats and salt marshes on the other. The mudflats are submerged at each high tide, twice a day, and barely have any vegetation. By contrast, the salt marshes are home to typical plant growth. From the lowest places on the mudflats to the highest parts of the salt marshes, there is a transition from wet to dry, from saltwater to freshwater and from significant to little influence by the tides. Salty mudflats and salt marshes are rare along the coasts and estuaries of Western Europe. They enjoy European protection as a result.
GOLF
You can play a challenging 9 holes on the new short golf course in a unique location, a mere stone's throw from the wonderful sandy beaches and Zwin nature reserve. Beautiful, far-reaching views will form the backdrop to your game of golf.
THE MOST FASHIONABLE CITY IN THE BENELUX
Knokke, a chic seaside resort on the Flemish coast, is also known as the most fashionable city in the Benelux and attracts huge number of visitors with its long boulevard, busy shopping streets with hundreds of small shops, over 250 restaurants and bustling night life.
This is the city of fabulous cars, prominent stores, culinary highlights and appealing beach clubs bursting with joie de vivre where you can imagine you are on the Cote d’Azur and where, instead of chocolate, people eat pralines by Chocolatier M. The award-winning chocolatier David Maenhout makes pralines with a wide range of ingredients such as clove, tonka beans, sake and thyme.
THE LIVELY REGION OF KNOKKE-HEIST
Is it the waves in particular, or perhaps the sports fanatics out there on the waves? Windsurfing, kitesurfing, sailing... whatever the case may be, the beaches simply invite you to get out there and enjoy yourself. Six water sports clubs provide the perfect opportunity and optimal conditions. It is a wide range that has something for everyone. From catamaran sailing, kitesurfing, windsurfing, surfing, SUP boarding, rafting, kayak polo, sand yachting, sailing and beach kiting to spotting sea lions, hiring a powerboat, playing a Lakeside Game or mooring your own boot, anything is possible here.
THE QUIRKY CITY OF GHENT
The quirky city of Ghent simply lives and breathes history and offers a thrilling cultural cocktail which is brimming with trendy, modern city life. Ghent is a wonderful city for hedonists, a city on a human scale. It hosts many major events, such as Ghent Jazz and the Festival of Flanders, which made Ghent into a UNESCO Creative City of Music.
We also highly recommend the Ghent Festivities. During this event, the city centre is transformed into one huge festival during ten days of summer. The city has a long history. The Mystic Lamb or (to give it its full name) ‘The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb’ by the Van Eyck brothers, unveiled in 1432, is renowned as an artistic highlight all over the world, one of the most influential paintings ever made. The ‘Castle of the Counts’ is a castle with a rather eventful history, closely interwoven with the complex and often turbulent political and social history of the city and the only remaining medieval moated castle with a virtually intact defence system in Flanders. A visit to the Castle of the Counts will give you a complete picture of knight culture in the 12th century.
There's no need to leave Ghent to feel as if you are in the south of France. In the courtyard garden of Saint Peter's Abbey, you can wander happily among lavender and vineyards. It was reconstructed according to historical examples, built on the terraced gardens which a pretentious abbot had created in the eighteenth century.
HEALTHY SEA AIR
The coast is the ideal place to relax, so it should come as no surprise to find numerous options here for a day of wellness. The healthy sea air, combined with the wellness facilities, will ensure a balanced body and mind. We will be happy to help you organise a custom package.
