THE ATMOSPHERIC CITY OF VEERE
Veere has a rich past and simply breathes history. The narrow cobbled streets, stately merchants' houses, Grote Kerk church and famous town hall will transport you back to times past. Various events take place in and near the city all year round. The historic market, fish market and city walks along the old city walls of Veere are an experience in themselves. The guides from Museum Veere will be happy to take you on a tour of the city's hidden gems. Why not join them and hear the stories hidden behind the facades?
Water sports oasis
The Veerse Meer is an oasis for water sports fans. It is a paradise for surfers, canoeists, sailors, waterskiers, divers and fishing fans. The various harbours in Veere form a good starting point. In the Veerse Meer, numerous uninhabited islands are just waiting to be discovered. We highly recommend mooring at one of these special places. The Veerse Meer also has plenty of attractive nature reserves. You can explore most of them under your own steam, at your leisure.
THE OLDEST COASTAL RESORT IN ZEELAND
Domburg is the oldest coastal resort in Zeeland. Both picturesque and cosmopolitan, it combines wonderful beaches with fabulous landscapes. Domburg has been renowned as a coastal resort since the middle of the 19th century. The pure sea air forms a unique combination with the extensive forest and dune area. Domburg was already renowned as a health resort in the previous century. In the wake of the famous physician Dr. Mezger, many noble people chose to visit Domburg for its restorative climate. You can still take various treatments here today.
An atmosphere of artistry
Domburg is a village of artists. It is famous for its clear skies, pure air and healing sea water. At the beginning of the 20th century, this area inspired various well-known writers, composers and painters, such as Jan Toorop and Piet Mondriaan. The light of Zeeland shines here like nowhere else… In the dune area, you will find the Domburg Piet Mondriaan route which takes you past the many locations which the artist painted in Domburg and the surrounding area.
Bomb craters and grass bunkers
Are you a golf lover and would you like to play in a unique environment for a change, among the dunes and in a wonderfully forested setting? No problem at the Domburgsche Golf Club. This is the only true ‘links’ course in the Netherlands and many people regard it as one of the most attractive 9-hole golf courses in the country. Right from the very first tee, you can admire the wonderful view over Walcheren and the North Sea. The wind and rough often ensure a challenging round of golf. The Domburgsche Golf links was opened in 1914. During the Second World War, the course suffered greatly during military operations. The numerous bomb craters which date back to that period are now grass bunkers and form a characteristic part of the course.
ONE OF THE BEST SHOPPING CITIES IN ZEELAND
Middelburg is one of the best shopping destinations in the Netherlands. The Lange Delft is the biggest shopping street in Middelburg. Here, you will mainly find the larger chain stores. Prefer more unusual shops and boutiques? If so, don't miss Segeerstraat, Sint Jansstraat and the Langeviele. Among other things, you will find concept store InMiddels, Lievelings, Plantaardig (an urban plant nursery and a paradise for plant lovers), Wit&Zo, De Zeeuwse Jordaan and BMK Interieurs.
During your visit, you will undoubtedly come across many different sights as Middelburg has around 1,100 monuments. The main sights include the City Hall, Long John Abbey Tower and the historical Kuiperspoort. However, be sure to visit the Abbey, Oostkerk church, historic Kloveniersdoelen building, Gistpoort gate, harbour, Vismarkt or Koepoort gate as well, as these sights are also well worth a visit.
From the Vleeshal to a quirky theatre
As well as shopping and historical sights, Middelburg also has many cultural activities to offer. For example, it is well worth visiting the Vleeshal which is unique in Zeeland. The Vleeshal organises unique exhibitions and projects based around contemporary visual arts. Middelburg also forms the platform for the biggest cultural and musical festival in Zeeland: the Zeeland Nazomerfestival which offers a very wide range of unique shows on location, theatre, dance, performances and music. There are over 40 galleries and studios in the historic centre of Middelburg. If you would like to visit (some of) them, you can follow the Art and Culture Route on the first Sunday of every month (Sunday shopping day). All the participants open their doors on this day.
