Phuket is an island with beautiful beaches, green mountains, friendly locals and throbbing nightlife. Phuket has 35 beaches ranging from very popular, such as Patong Beach, to quiet gems, such as Banana Beach and Laem Sing Beach. The water is crystal clear, there are dozens of restaurants and no shortage of water activities, either. Enjoy the unique experience of going paragliding here, or surfing the giant waves.
A refreshing shower
Phuket has experienced rapid growth in recent years. A lot of jungle has been cleared to make way for hotels, infrastructure and rubber tree plantations. The protected areas where you can retreat into nature are to cherish. These include the Bang Pae Waterfall, which is located in a beautiful nature reserve. Where you enter a completely different world and can take a refreshing dip and a shower.
Caves and mangrove forests
Phuket's geographical location makes it a great home base for exploring nearby islands and nature reserves. Tucked away in Phang Nga Bay are many lovely beaches, caves and mangrove forests, which you can see up close from a kayak. Or go out in a boat and spend hours sailing past the massive rock formations.
The Similan Islands are a breathtakingly beautiful group of islands where you can enjoy great snorkelling and scuba diving and marvel at all of the coral reefs and fish. You can also catch the longtail boat and spend the day on neighbouring small islands such as Coral Island, Racha Island and the Khai Islands.
Wat Chalong is an ornately decorated temple in the south of Phuket and the most important Buddhist temple on the island. The murals painted on the temple walls are especially interesting. Wat Chalong is associated with the monks Luang Pho Chaem (1827-1908) and Luang Pho Chuang (1875-1945). They were renowned herbalists and healed hundreds of sick people in their day. Many Thai believe in the supernatural powers of these monks and travel to Wat Chalong to worship them. Both monks also played a crucial role in putting an end to a chaotic uprising of Chinese immigrants working in Phuket's tin mines in 1876.
