Melting pot of civilisations

Chania is a lovely town; once you have been there it will be forever etched into your memory. It is one of the most picturesque and inviting places on Crete. Chania is the second most populated town on Crete and is located in the northwestern part of the island. It is home to a little more than 100,000 people. You will get a taste of the unique atmosphere in the Old Town. Here, the influences from all sorts of different cultures are clearly visible. Chania is a melting pot of civilisations. The most beautiful parts of the city are the areas around the Venetian and old port and the old town that lies partly within the old Byzantine city wall and partly within the Venetian city wall.

A stroll through the quaint narrow alleys lined with traditional houses, monuments, shops, cafés and restaurants is absolutely worthwhile. You will see charming alleys with arches, stairs and flowers. There are colourful buildings, small chapels, large Byzantine churches and minarets here. You can tell that the Venetians and the Ottomans set foot here by many buildings, old seaside resorts and mosques, which nowadays have been transformed into museums or shops.

Significant historic and cultural value

The Venizelos square in the old port is one of the most popular spots in Chania. The colourful buildings on the harbour are fascinating and refer to other times. Old traditional buildings and mansions show that Chania was a prosperous town in the past. The neoria or shipyards are a feature of the Venetian Harbour and were built between the 14th and 16th century. Today, the Venetian Harbour is where sailing boats and fishing boats moor.

The entrance to the harbour is flanked by Fort Firka on one side and Chania's iconic lighthouse on the other. The town is home to numerous historic monuments with significant historic and cultural value. In Chania, you can clearly see the influences of various faiths that left their mark on the town. Dating back to 1913, the covered 'Agora' market hall has over 70 shops selling mainly local produce.

An extra dimension

Platanias is best known for its long (7 km) sandy beach. The village consists of two parts. The oldest, Ano Platanias, is built on the slope of a steep hill. In this authentic part of Platanias, typical Greek houses and tavernas set the mood. The view of the rugged hills and the Aegian Sea add an extra dimension to this part of the village.

Hiking through Samaria Gorge: one of the world's narrowest

The Samaria gorge is one of the narrowest gorges in the world Between the high cliffs you can marvel at the springs and chapels. After making a descent of 1,200 metres, you can start a scenic 26 kilometre hike. The rugged nature and high mountains along the way provide amazing views. At the end of the gorge you arrive at the Libyan Sea. Here you can catch a boat to Paleochora, a small peninsula.

Organic garden
