Porto Vecchio, Old Port
Porto-Vecchio is an idyllic town located on a spectacular natural bay. In addition to the picturesque and centuries-old town centre, there is a fine marina here, too. Just like the rest of the island, the history of Porto-Vecchio dates back to Roman times. The town, which literally translated means 'Old Port', takes its name from the anchorage place that was located here back then. After World War II, the nearby swamp was drained and Porto Vecchio became suitable for permanent habitation. Initially, it mainly attracted the salt and cork industries. From 1970 onward, however, the town grew into an attractive destination thanks to its pristine natural environment and the sheltered port.
