Nature, culture, heritage, beach & canals
Canals that transect the town, the Mont Saint-Clair that offers a splendid view of the Pyrenees, a fishing port in the centre, 12 kilometres of soft sandy beach: Sète offers virtually everything you could wish for.
A town on the water...
A little over three centuries ago, Louis the XIV decided that the Canal du Midi needed an exit to the sea. The port of Sète was completed on 29 July 1666. The wine trade was what mainly brought the port a lot of wealth. This wealth can still be recognised by the many beautiful buildings that adorn the city. With its cargo and passenger ships and sailing and fishing boats, the port is the heart of the town. It has a very special atmosphere that has inspired many writers, poets and singers, including Paul Valéry, Jean Vilar and Georges Brassens.
Vineyards and shellfish
If you would like to learn more about the products of this region, visit the people behind them, either on the banks of the Etang de Thau or inland. In Bouzigues, you can sample the renowned oysters; Frontignan and Mireval have delicious sweet muscat wine to offer; Marseillan is famous for Noilly Prat (a vermouth); and in Pinet, you must try the Picpoul (a flavourful white wine).
Beautifully preserved nature
Between the sea and the hills, natural heritage unfurls in the shape of lagoons (étangs), steep limestone cliffs and the garrigue, an arid landscape with tough shrubs. From the Massif de la Gardiole, you look out over the Etang de Thau and the Etang de Vic, a paradise for birds and a landscape with incredible biodiversity.
